About island.is

island.is is a guide to public services and a way of making it easier for the public to access such services.

What is island.is?

  • island.is is one of the main tasks in the project Iceland the e-Nation, the Icelandic Government's policy for the information society 2008–12. The policy states: “An overview of online public services shall be available at www.island.is, which shall serve as an Internet centre, i.e. one site that gives access to information and services from any public body”.
  • island.is was developed by the Prime Minister's Office and launched in March 2007, since when it has been in continuous operation and development.
  • As of 1 January 2011, the project's development and operation were transferred to Registers Iceland.

Main role of island.is

  • Government information and service portal. The website provides easy access to information on public services, making it unnecessary for users to know beforehand who provides the service. Also provides access to a large number of public forms.
  • Toolbox. Tools which are of use to all public bodies have been developed on the island.is website. These include centralised identification, electronic document submissions and an electronic service layer which, among other things, makes data exchange easier. The toolbox has been available since 2009 and is used by many public bodies.
    • Agencies using the centralised indentification at island.is: Bændasamtök Íslands/The Farmers Association of Iceland, Heilsugæsla Höfuðborgarsvæðisins/Primary Health Care of the Capital Area, Íbúðalánasjóður/Housing Financing Fund, Lánasjóður íslenskra námsmanna/Icelandic Student Loan Fund, Matvælastofnun/The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority, Rannís/The Icelandic Centre for Research, Siglingastofnun Íslands/Icelandic Maritime Adminstration, Sjúkratryggingar Íslands/Icelandic Health Insurance, Tryggingastofnun/The Social Insurance Administration, Umferðarstofa/The Road Traffic Directorate and Þjóðskrá Íslands/Registers Iceland.
    • Agencies using the electronic document submission at island.is: Fornleifavernd ríkisins/The Archaeological Heritage Agency of Iceland, Grindavíkurbær/Grindavik municipality, Matvælastofnun/The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority, Nýsköpunarmiðstöð Íslands/Innovation Center Iceland, Þjóðskrá Íslands/Registers Iceland and Örnefnanefnd/Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies, dept. of Place Names and Names Studies.
  • My pages, with individualised access to key files owned by the authorities and access to public services. My pages were launched in mai 2011.

Management of the project

  • A consultation committee operated by the Prime Minister's Office, consisting of members from ministries and municipalities, makes policy formulating decisions in accordance with the Icelandic Government's policies on the information society.
  • Registers Iceland, the department of e-administration, is responsible for the development and operation of the project.
