First days

Everyone who resides in Iceland is registered at Registers Iceland and must have an identification (ID) number, which is a ten-digit number. The ID number serves as a gateway to Icelandic society.

Individuals who stay or are planning to stay in Iceland for six months or longer must have a legal domicile in Iceland. An individual´s legal domicile is the place where he/she has a fixed residence.

Anyone aged 18 years or older who comes to Iceland to live or work for longer than three months must, within seven days of her/his arrival, report a place of residence in Iceland.
