Adoption

The adoption of a child is subject to certain conditions and demands extensive preparation, but the basic requirement is that adoption is for the best of the child. Those who want to adopt a child from another country must first contact the Icelandic Adoption Society.

Child benefits

Child benefits are intended to assist parents with their children and to equalise their situations. A certain amount is paid out to parents for each child until the child reaches 18 years of age.

Considerations during pregnancy

There are a number of things to take into account to ensure the health and well-being of a mother-to-be and her child. These include diet, mental health and the circumstances of daily life.

Infertility/artificial insemination

Those wishing to obtain treatment for infertility can make direct contact with the medical centre ART Medica, which operates under licence from the Ministry of Welfare and carries out all services in this field in Iceland. You can also contact your doctor or a specialist.

Maternity/paternity leave and parental leave

The parents of a child are entitled to paid leave at childbirth, when adopting a child and when becoming a permanent foster parent. They receive holiday allowance or childbirth allowance, depending on their situation in the labour market

Name giving

A child must be given a name before the age of six months. The Personal Names Register includes all Icelandic names that have been approved. A special act of law applies to the giving of names.

Pregnancy and childbirth

Pregnant women receive pre-natal care free of charge, if they have been had legal residence in Iceland for the past six months. The purpose of this care is to promote the health of the mother and child with professional care, support and training.

Students with children

Students receive a discount on day care for their children, both with childminders and nursery schools.
